Engine Timing

Engine timing is the most important thing in these engines. This is the dark art. Timing is what determines the performance level of the engine. This is where the biggest gains are. The second most important thing in the engine is the bore and stroke. This will tell you how the power curve will be shaped. Port count is the next important thing. However port count doesnt determine the performance nor the powerband. 3 Port engines can perform as good or better then 5, 7, 9, etc port engines. Higher port count doesnt mean more flow, it just means airflow control. With the addition of more ports you actually lose port area. So these extra ports are just shaping the flow through the sleeve into the chamber. This has affects on the air fuel mixture in the chamber.

Engine Timing Table

This is the most complete timing number database that you will find for RC Nitro engines.

Note: In obtaining this info there was modified timings as well. I consider this to be private information and im not willing to publicize someone elses private intellectual property. So any notes in relation to changes or what to do have been removed. I instead I tell you to do your own research and development. You will learn far more then you ever would copying. This site will only show engines that you can or could at the time buy off the shelf as stock or tuned by the factory.

Special Thanks: 1st Racing Germany for the initial timing sheet off of their old website. Roelof Tooms of the Netherlands and Adam Blevins from the late AB Mods in USA for the timing numbers of all of the engines that came through their hands.

The timing of the sleeve ports is only listed once, as these have the same degree opening and closing time anyway. Only the crankshaft opening and closing times are not symmetrical. In times where there is number+number then that means it is a multi port exhaust and the timings differ. The higher timing number is on the outer ports. Additionally if you see Boost and Timing have the same numbers its because they are the same. Differences in these started showing up in the late 90s/early 2000s engines.

The valve timing has been slightly modified compared to the 2006 engine. Like the RB engines of the C6BB series, Rossi now uses a MES (Multiexhaust) system with different exhaust timings, so that the main exhaust has a timing of 166° and the lead exhausts 178°. This promises a significant increase in torque without sacrificing revs. The port timings have also been slightly reduced, which also affects fuel consumption. The crankshaft timing was only slightly modified, but a significant difference – and this is what makes it special – is that the crankshaft is not potted with silicone, but instead has a hard plastic insert that covers the entire bore of the shaft. Even with improper engine treatment using the wrong preservative oils, there are no problems with the silicone swelling or the insert potentially falling out, especially since the plastic insert is additionally anchored in the crankshaft. The shaft is balanced twice using tungsten inserts. The main bearing, which is fitted with ceramic balls , is standard equipment on the X1 Evolution series.

The Novarossi Toro Nero features a new and previously unused locking mechanism for the cylinder liner in the engine casing. The locking pin is not located at the front or rear, but rather on the left side when viewed from the front. The bore/stroke ratio is also unusual: resulting in an extremely long stroke engine. Another notable feature is the crankshaft, which is balanced once and has a diameter of 14.5mm. This necessitates new ball bearings, not the front bearings, but the main bearing. The front bearing is the new 7x19x6 bearing with both seals facing outwards, featuring a plastic cage. The main bearing now measures 14.5x26x5.7mm. The crankshaft is also hollow-drilled, but unfortunately not potted with silicone, which does not allow for optimal intake of the fresh air/fuel mixture.

C6BB + C6BB T7 The exhaust timing of these two engines is unique in that, although symmetrical, it still has two different timings. The engine features the so-called MES (Multi-Exhaust System), which means that the exhaust port is divided into three channels: a large main exhaust port in the center and two smaller exhaust ports on either side. This system was previously used in the C5 engine, although in that case all the ports were at the same height. With the C6BB and C6BB T7, this is different. The smaller exhaust ports only close at a crankshaft angle of 180° (C6BB 90°+90°, as the valve timing of the cylinder liner is always symmetrical!) and 174° (C6BB T7), while the main exhaust port closes at 160° (80°+80°, both engines). This means the main port remains closed longer after combustion. (Always starting from a 0° angle when the piston is at bottom dead center!) This promises a significant increase in torque without sacrificing engine speed.

SIRIO .27 3-Channel Monster. This engine is available in the same size as both a 3-channel and a 7-channel version. Anyone who thinks the only difference is the running gear is sadly mistaken! The 3-port engine has a completely different crankshaft than the 7-port engine. It's clear that significant rework is possible. While casting the crankshaft isn't necessary for the 7-port engine, it's definitely recommended for the 3-port engine, as it's evident that it was produced more cheaply and with less attention to detail. Furthermore, the Sirio website shows the 3-port engine with an aluminum carburetor, which is no longer accurate, as it now uses a plastic compound carburetor. There are also two versions of the 7-port engine: one with a pull starter and one for a starter box. The difference lies in the fact that the Pro engine doesn't have a pull starter and consequently has a different rear cover and a different crankshaft, which, apart from the drive pin for the pull starter, is identical to the 7-port pull-start engine.

Sirio .28 STI Monster. What struck me about this engine is that it essentially only uses the casing from the Sirio Kanai EVOII 3.5cc class. Only the casing was bored out slightly! The cylinder liner is therefore relatively thin-walled, but overall it makes a very good impression. Regarding the issue of the piston pin circlips repeatedly coming loose and causing engine damage, I noticed that the groove in which the circlip sits looks very deformed. It's possible, of course, that the tool used to manufacture the groove had already reached or even exceeded its maximum lifespan, or perhaps was damaged unnoticed, so that a certain series of engines were produced with this defect before the standard tool change. The rework isn't great, but the deformed areas prevent the circlip from engaging precisely. A lost circlip is therefore almost inevitable. However, it should be sufficient to remove the burr in the groove and reinstall the circlip. However, it's not easy for someone who doesn't own a microscope or at least a magnifying glass of that size –beyond good and evil– Also noticeable is the huge gap of 0.85mm (normally everything between 0.6 and 0.7mm with 25% nitro); here, with poor adjustability, you might be able to remove 2/10ths.

Thunder Tiger PRO 21R. Please note that there are different versions of this engine. While the TTR engines in the Pro21R series share the same designation on the casing, they have different cylinder heads and crankshafts with diameters of 13 and 14 mm. This results in different valve timing for each engine. Consequently, differences in running characteristics, performance, and fuel consumption may occur.
